Tuesday - Psalm 131 - A Song of Humility

S
OMETIMES I imagine myself intelligent... or deep... or at least interested in profound things. Dunderheads usually will accept any flattering description we can muster for ourselves.  But, these thoughts are not only false, they are foolish.  In the words of Thomas Edison, "We don't know onemillionth of one percent about anything."  So, let's not imagine that we have "it" all figured out (Romans 12:3).

In this psalm, David confessed that he was a humble man who had more limitations than abilities.  God had used life to teach him that at the least, he knew enough to know that he didn't know enough.  But that was ok with him (Psalm 131:2).  All was well with his soul and in his heart, because he had learned to look to God (Psalm 131:3).

Let us never walk around with our noses in the air snootily as if we are God's gift to the world. Humility is more noble than expertise. God doesn't need our professional opinion, but He does want our heart and He does value our trust.  Remember, in God's system, the way up, is down... the way to lead, is to serve... the way to have, is to give... the way to get, is to lose... the way to live, is to die... the way to be first, is to accept being last.
