N chapter 4, we read Solomon's fine compliments toward his
wife. In this chapter, we read his
wife's reciprocations. She was
definitely just as impressed with her husband as he was with her. The biggest difference in these two rich
descriptions is that he addressed his words directly to her, while in this case
she spoke of him to her friends (the daughters of Jerusalem) rather than
directly to him.
She spoke yearningly about the details of her beloved
husband. His hands, his head, his eyes,
his hair, his skin, his lips, his cheeks, his belly, his legs and his mouth
were all specifically admired. She
praised him as if he were the finest specimen of manhood that the world had
ever seen. She loved him as if he were
the only man in the world. In summary,
she said simply, "Yes, he is
altogether lovely. This is my beloved,
and this is my friend" (Song of Solomon 5:16). She was truly in love. Her heart was overcome with longing for her
husband; her lover; her friend (Song of Solomon 5:4).
As we have seen in the previous chapters, we can easily draw
some amazing parallels from this connubial example as we redirect our attention
to a higher plane. God has spoken many
kind and generous words to us in His Word.
And, indeed, because He has done this, we have the opportunity and
ability to respond in kind (1st John 4:19). We can and should pray to Him constantly with
much praise and adoration.
