Monday - Ecclesiastes 12 - Sunset

OR 12 days now, we have been reading the meditations of an old preacher named Solomon (Ecclesiastes 12:8-10). He has given us much to think about concerning our lives "under the sun" (on this earth).  In closing this great book of the Bible, Solomon reminds us that someday the sun will set on our journey.

Ecclesiastes 12:3-5 poetically describes what most average humans have to look forward to.  Barring special circumstances, our hands will begin to tremble, our back will curve forward, our teeth will fall out and our eyes will become dim.  We will find our world has shrunk to the four walls of the room in which we lie.  Our ears will fail us.  Sleep will be fitful.  Our voice will become weak.  Climbing will cease to be an option.  Uneasiness will become the norm.  Our hair will be gray, every object will seem heavy and life's interests will dwindle... as we move toward the grave and await the only remaining earthly appointment we have, which will be our own funeral.

In the words of the old hymn, "Someday the silver cord will break and I no more as now shall sing" (Ecc. 12:6).  This body is going to return to the dust from which it was formed (Ecc. 12:7).  The final deed we can do, will have been done. Our last thought will have faded, and our last words whispered.  And, while this perspective may seem doleful and dreary, the conclusion that follows is flawless: So, Solomon says, "Fear God, and keep His commandments…
