f there is a thing called "good doctrine" then we should reasonably assume that there is a thing called "bad doctrine" too. Actually, we don't have to assume. We know with certainty that bad doctrine not only exists, it prevails (I Timothy 4:1). Solomon was keen on propagating good doctrine (Proverbs 4:2). If doctrine is teaching... specifically spiritual teaching about the nature of truth and divine regulations, then it stands to reason that these descriptions have many altered forms that have enough semblance to the truth to fool us. As you surely already know, in any field of knowledge, the best way to become good at identifying error is to be thoroughly familiar with truth. So, what is our standard of truth?
David challenged his son to pursue God’s revelation, and obviously Solomon bought into it (Proverbs 4:3-4 & 1st Kings 3:9). One of the first doctrines to "buy into" is that there is a distinct difference between good doctrine and bad doctrine. When studying theology, you must begin with Bibliology. It makes sense that the doctrine of the nature, source, reliability and purpose of doctrine itself is fundamental to all other doctrines. Solomon was wisely receptive concerning the good doctrine of his dad (Proverbs 4:10-11). That was step one. Good doctrine is fundamental. True doctrine supersedes all else. Why? Because God is its source & its destination.
