E want peace, don't we? We really do! Peace in our town, in our country, in the
world, in our family, in our heart. Real and lasting peace is a great prize. To
our chagrin, consternation and conflict are the status quo in this life. But, according to Ephesians 2:14, Christ
is our peace. In Him disputes are settled, victory is complete, order is
restored, and harmony is realized (Isaiah
26:3). From the other side, in the words of Christ in John 14:27, He said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I
give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be
troubled, neither let it be afraid." Oh sure, a glorious peace is
coming during the millennial reign of Christ, but we can experience that peace
now in our hearts if we will simply allow Him to reign in us now.
When we seek peace only, we never find it. Peace is found in
the person of God's Son. When we come to
the place of honestly desiring Him, then peace follows naturally. He is the
source of our peace (Isaiah 26:12). He brings life while all substitute
affections bring only death. We should thank God for the trials that have
brought us to our knees at His feet (Isaiah 26:16-18). Like David wrote in
Psalm 119:67, "Before I was
afflicted, I went astray: but now have I kept Your word." Our troubles can and should drive us to
depend upon God. And, in that dependence we can discover the peace that
accompanies truth, righteousness and justice. Without faith in God, there is no
peace. "There is no peace, says my
God, to the wicked" (Isaiah 57:21). With God's peace we can rest
confident that even the grave cannot rob us of our station in Him (Isaiah
26:19-20). Although His wrath will rage against the ungodly all around us, we
have peace with Him and therefore we have access to His perfect peace.
Hallelujah!
