Monday - Isaiah 32 - The Shadow of a Great Rock

I
N the words of the old hymn, "Jesus is a Rock in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm. A shade by day; defense by night...." (see also Isaiah 32:2). Well now, we certainly live in a weary land. The weariness of our modern society reminds me of the weariness of the perverts of Genesis 19:11. There is a sickening tiredness in sin. Yet, in a world overcome with iniquity, we are not obligated to be burnt by the rays of evil which constantly burst forth from the explosions of toxic rebellion which permeate our society. There is a place of refuge. There is a Great Rock which casts a long shadow in which we can safely hide. In Him, we have access to a supreme calmness and security which no measure of immoral or irreverent mayhem can possibly disturb. As Isaiah wrote in verse 17, "The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever (Isaiah 32:17).

According to this chapter, there are vile and churlish persons who do much damage with their villainy and churlishness (Isaiah 32:5-7). More specifically, there was coming a time in Israel when (due to generations of rebellion) trouble and trembling would become the norm. Happily, we find here yet another reminder that the difficulties in Israel's future were not destined to continue forever.  Just as certainly as misery was on the way, so also was a time of peace and blessing coming (Isaiah 32:15-20).
