HILE this chapter is a prophecy concerning Damascus &
the Syrians, it has broader significance. Let’s examine what kinds of things
the enemies of God have ahead of them, so we can be informed as we warn them
& invite them to repent. The words Isaiah used in relation to Israel's
persecutors were as follows: ruin, loneliness, leanness, desolation, grief,
woe, desperate sorrow, trouble and rebuke. He said that they would be "like a rolling thing before the
whirlwind" (vs. 13); like the leftovers after a harvest. Why were they
destined to die? (Aimed directly at the Syrians), Because they had forgotten
God (vs. 10).
Concerning God, in Him is life! Without Him, there is only
death & darkness. Those who oppose Him are sure to find out eventually that
their own religious manufactures are all vain (vs. 8). And, even the most
hardened opponent God has will eventually discover that the only direction to
look will be "to his Maker... to the
Holy One of Israel" (vs. 7). Notice that it is not only the children
of God who owe God obeisance, His enemies do as well. He is the Maker of us all
(Proverbs 16:4). God's opponents are
bound to give Him glory, though they receive no benefit from it. God's faithful
children glorify Him by giving Him pleasure, & are blessed with many
benefits (Psalm 68:19).
