OAB is God's wash pot (Psalm 60:8
& 108:9). An illustration of this reality is seen in the life of Naomi, the
mother-in-law of Ruth. Her sojourning in
Moab left her empty. Nebuchadnezzar had
taken Judea & Jerusalem, he was going to take Egypt as well. But, it was
important that the remnant of the Jews not consider Moab to be a third option.
God was attempting to get His people to look only to Him.
Now, what was the problem with
Moab anyway? Why was Jehovah God against them?
Well, indeed, this is a lengthy passage, and so, many answers to those
questions could be given. However, Jeremiah 48:7 makes it abundantly clear what
the root of their problem was. God's word for them was, "Because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you
shall also be taken..." The offense is further explained in Jeremiah
48:10, "Cursed be he that does the
work of the LORD deceitfully..." God had allowed this foolishness in
Moab to continue for many generations. Yet, the time had arrived for God to
bring justice onto the east bank of the Jordan River. The Moabites had replaced
the God of their father Lot with the idol Chemosh. They had practiced rigorous
religious rituals, but they had not aimed them at the God who is worthy of
them. Hence, all of their "spiritual" devotion was considered by God
to be their own work... the works of their hands.
