N Genesis 6:3 The LORD said, “My spirit
shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be a 120 years." The fact that God
set a timetable; that there is a limit to God's patience, this is a stark
realization indeed. Here in Ezekiel 7 we again find that God set limitations on
just how far He would allow a culture to go before He reigned in their freedom
and put an end to their rebellion. And, Israel had reached the proverbial
"end of their rope" (verses 3-7).
It would have been awfully hard
for Ezekiel to walk through the prophetic landscape (that God had laid out
before him) without feeling some measure of despair. Especially for God Himself
to put "an end" to the nation of Israel altogether – this would have
been an incredibly difficult concept for Ezekiel to grasp. But there was no mistaking
God's intentions. The Jews were full of pride, and God was full of fury
(Ezekiel 7:9-10). The Jews had learned to look to their wealth for their
security, but God had a violent program prepared for their humiliation and
demise. Even His holy temple was going to be given to the heathen. The end of Israel was intended by God to be
without peace and without principal (Ezekiel 7:25-26). God was finally willing
to say, "Enough is enough!"
