bet you never thought you would
read a verse in the Bible about bottled water. Well, maybe you still won't.
But, as we conclude the book of Lamentations, we do find a verse that includes
a complaint from the Jews that they had to pay in order to drink their own
water (Lamentations 5:4). And indeed, that's among the mildest of the hardships
which they had to endure. As we read this final Hebrew poem, we find that the people
of God were utterly in despair. All they could see was God's anger. There was
no safety, and no mercy that they could perceive (Lamentations 5:11). Social
friendships were gone. The music had been silenced. There was no reason to be
happy about anything. There was a small remnant of Jews who became convinced
that God was "there," but they were not at all persuaded that there
was any hope of ever being blessed by Him again (Lamentations 5:22). Not to say
that they didn't ask for it, because they most certainly did (Lamentations
5:21). But, the fact remains, they felt forsaken and forgotten.
Having to pay to drink water that
was supposedly already yours would certainly be a very frustrating thing. But,
knowing that God is alive and able to do anything, and yet to have to
continually endure hardships, this also is frustrating... on a much deeper
level. Let us remember that no matter how difficult life becomes, and no matter
how much we may deserve our trials, and no matter how long our hardships
last... God's immutable love for us is bound to shine through eventually. We
must just continue to be faithful. In His time, He had revival in mind for the
Jews. In His time, He is going to do great things for us as well. Take your
burdens to the Lord and ask Him to help you carry them until such time that He
decides to remove them altogether. He does care. Do you believe that?
