OING the right thing in faith
doesn't always produce immediate success in this life (Hebrews 11:36-37). We
know that ultimately all faith decisions involve obedience to God, therefore by
definition every act of faith is successful (in His eyes), even if we end up on
the wrong end of a spear as a result of our devotion. But sometimes even in
this life God vindicates His children. Jeremiah enjoyed this kind of blessing.
Nebuchadnezzar had a captain
named Nebuzaradan who was assigned the kind task of setting Jeremiah free. Now,
it's not that the 2 Neb's were so devout or anything like that. Their favor
toward Jeremiah came by Providence. These men were informed about the fact that
(in the name of God) Jeremiah had told the king of Jerusalem to surrender to
the Babylonians. So, to them he was a friend.
Not only was Jeremiah released,
he was given his choice of where to go and what to do. And, he was offered
royal protection (vs. 5). Sadly, the royal appointee (Gedaliah) was neither
strong nor wise, so his oversight would prove to be little advantage to Jeremiah.
