LD paths are not good just because they are old. After all,
there are some old dead-end trails that wind off into the thicket looking twice
as wide, twice as worn and twice as inviting because many generations have
tried them only to have to back out again (Colossians 2:8). Remember, the devil
is no spring chicken. The old paths that are good are that way because they
have been proven. Jeremiah 6:16 thunders, "Stand
ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and
walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls." Rebels are ever
and always blazing new trails. Not that trailblazing is evil. Heroes and conquistadors cut trails were no trails
exist. Fools turn from tried and true paths to plunge into the thickets going
who-knows-where. We are speaking of course about spiritual and moral direction.
In this chapter, God compares Jerusalem to a beautiful woman
of wealth and culture (Jeremiah 6:2). What lifestyle will she choose? She could
follow the customs of the ancients. She could practice honesty, fidelity,
modesty and purity. Or, she could lay aside those becoming garments and become
a whore. Jerusalem chose the latter. She considered traditionalism prudish and
dreary, a thing to avoid at all cost. So, she found herself surrounded by what
she thought were attractive men (Jeremiah 6:3). But they weren't there to
admire her. They were there to kill her (Jeremiah 6:4-6, 9, 23-26).
