GUITLY conscience is
a heavy burden. It can also be a very
useful tool when used properly on a willing patient by the skillful hand of
God. After all, we indeed are all
actually guilty. This is why Christ came
and died (Hebrews 9:14). By the way, if
you have been washed in the blood of the Lamb, your sins are forgiven and your
guilt expunged absolutely. Don't ever
let the devil convince you that you are still in trouble for things that God
has gladly forgotten. False guilt is an
unnecessary burden and an inhibition to spiritual victory. Legitimate guilt is deserved, of course, and
should drive us humbly to the foot of the cross.
Proverbs 28:1 reintroduces to us a man who is guilty. He runs and hides even when nobody is trying
to find him. Why? A guilty conscience. He has transgressed. He has trespassed. He knows he deserves to be in trouble, so he
may be ever afraid that he is about to be caught. And for what?
Well, the list here goes on and on and on.
Proverbs 28 informs us of an unexpected temporal product of
transgression. When men transgress, one
of the negative things that God brings upon a transgressing society is that
they (or, we) find themselves under many masters who require much and contribute
little (Proverbs 28:2). In other words,
transgressions bring stress, complications and a lack of liberty.
So, what are we to do when we are guilty? We are to confess our guilt and forsake the
vice (28:13). Then, and only then, can
we become bold and victorious (28:1).
Transgressions hinder (and strangely, they also accentuate) God's
generosity toward us. We must learn to
stay inbounds and to play by the rules.
If we will do this, we won't regret it!
