can't think of a single psalm that is more relevant and
applicable to contemporary culture than the one we get to look at today. Today it seems like we are running out of
godly men. Today men who are exceedingly
vile and ungodly are being lifted to higher and increasingly prominent
positions of authority. We look around
in today's culture and see flattery, deception, pride, rebellion and oppression
as common as the dirt on the ground.
And, what is our cry? It is the
same as David's was. We cry, "Help!
Lord." Where are the faithful; the
dependable; the statesmen; the men of character and discipline that used to run
the show and call the shots in our country?
Praise God for the rainbow of hope and comfort and
confidence which we see in verses 5 - 7 in this Psalm: "'For
the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise,' says
the LORD; 'I will set him in safety from him that puffs at him.' The words of the LORD are pure words: as
silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them,
0 LORD, Thou shalt preserve them from
this generation forever." Now,
not only are God's eternal words and promises perfect and enduring, but so are
His people. He has promised to put us in
a place of safety... to protect us from our evil enemies who seem to have such
great power. What a promise!
